A day in the life of a Cambridge student

If you have ever wondered what a day in the life of a Cambridge student is like, I am here to share my experience. In this post, I am going to share a typical routine and tell you about everything from getting ready in the morning, reaching the university, attending lectures, and what to do in your free time.  

My day starts at 7 in the morning. I like to get up early to ensure I have everything I need for the day. I shower breakfast, do some exercise, and head out of the house by 8 am. Then I hop on the bus to the campus which takes just 10 minutes from my student accommodation in Cambridge. The bus is the most common way to travel and as it is free, I don’t have to worry about spending on transportation. Reach the university and go to the English faculty building. I have different modes of transportation to reach the college. I can take one of the three buses from my accommodation. Bus number 11 stops right outside the front door, but 819 passes by on Parker’s Piece Road and bus 27A is available from King’s Parade. If I am not in the mood to take a bus or pay extra money for a taxi ride, then biking is one of the best options. However, if it is a rainy day, I avoid the bike.  

My lectures start at 10 am and finish by 11 am. The English Faculty building is located on Sidgwick Avenue and I reach my lectures always on time. If you are new to the place and not sure where you are heading, then it is best to ask someone. There are many other libraries around Cambridge if you need one closer than this one. The Houghton Library and the Sidney Sussex College Library have an amazing collection of books. You will also find interesting and rare manuscripts and books here.  

The University Library opens up around 11 am. Once my lectures are over, I go there and study for an hour or two. The library has everything which a student needs like books, journals, databases, and other resources. The students can also use computers to access the internet and study in the book room. You can grab food from one of the dining halls, sit on the bench in front of Jesus Green, or wander over to Queens College gardens.  

Then I feel hungry and look for lunch. There are a wide range of options when you want to have lunch inside the university. You can grab something from one of the dining halls or also pick up something at the café or the restaurant. There are also different parks and gardens around Cambridge where you can sit down and eat. Today, I went to Tesco Express, picked up a nice sandwich, sat in the park, and enjoyed my meal.  

The Fitzwilliam Museum also has its own restaurant. Here you can find meals all day long. So, if you are searching for something quick and easy during the break between classes or just want to grab some food before heading back home, this is one of the best places to try.  

Once my lunch is done, I go back to the campus for my afternoon lectures. It is usually from 2 pm to 4 pm. After that, I go back to the library and study depending on how many assignments I am left with. The typical life of a student in Cambridge is jam-packed. There is a lot of work to do, but you also get time to relax and have fun. You don’t need to be studying all the time as that will make you stressed out and unhappy. So, we all get breaks from our studies now and then so we can do something else instead of just sitting at home reading books or writing essays throughout.
