A green entrepreneur is someone who starts and runs an entrepreneurial venture designed to be green in its product and process from the moment it is set up. A need of the time initiative, an Erasmus report describes a green entrepreneur as someone who possesses entrepreneurs’ characteristics while addressing an environmental or social problem at the core of their business.
The green entrepreneurs must possess strong internal motivation while also having a heightened sensitivity to environmental problems. Their business activities should also have a net positive effect on the natural environment while financially independent. Today, green entrepreneurship is on the rise and fast expanding. This is because of the sense of awareness that makes most new entrepreneurs socially responsible pushes them to do their part for the ecosystem. Their work also improves health outcomes, and their health care cost is significantly reduced. Apart from this, some businesses have reduced their electricity cost considerably by incorporating solar panels.
Here are a few people who are appreciated for their initiative to begin a green start-up:
Apart from the ones mentioned, there are other green entrepreneurs like Jameson Morris of Organic Soul and Conscious Box, Emily Wilkinson, the creator of botlfilter, Eric Fitch, founder of PurposeEnergy and many more.
To build a start-up is a huge responsibility. However, to build a green start-up is a bigger responsibility that requires a stronger resolve. While the entire start-up building process doesn’t change drastically when turning green, there are a few ways where it definitely needs work, like sustainable packaging, digital recordkeeping, using renewable resources, etc. Another positive way of going green is by going local. Most raw materials are found in nature around us. There are a lot of times when we reach out further towards the forests and limited green lands for our needs when they could easily be fulfilled in our local surroundings. Thus, going local could promote local products as well as reduce production costs to an extent.
