“Defund The Police” is the new cry in the U.S.

Defund The Police

“Defund The Police” movement popularized in the U.S. after the death of George Floyd.

It means the withdrawal of funds from the police department. This movement is gaining momentum due to the injustice suffered by the black Americans at the hands of the police.

The co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement said that defunding police means reducing its ability to harm their community.

Various studies show that black Americans are killed at a much higher rate than white Americans. They are always at a greater risk for legal punishment as compared to white Americans.

The continuous crimes against black Americans in the name of law by police led to the outburst of this movement.

Views on Defund the Police

There are two different views in support of the “Defund The Police” movement. Some proponents of this movement advocate complete defunding and disbanding towards the police.

At the same time, others believe that funds should be divested from the police department to the disadvantaged communities.

According to the supporters of the “Defund The Police” movement, the government of America spends relentlessly on policing rather than giving importance to social welfare activities like housing, education, health challenges, etc.

The supporters of the “Defund The Police” movement want to divert these funds towards the communities that have been deeply divested from.

These communities will work for their social welfare and will govern their resources and techniques.

Execution of The Movement

“Defund The Police” movement seems to be an innovative approach to deal with the problems in the system.

However, it raises various questions regarding its execution, impact, and alternative options.

The Center on Crime and Community Resilience at Northeastern University is trying to find a research-based solution to such questions.

Its director, Ben Struhl, notes that the proponents of defunding movement don’t necessarily agree on how to achieve that goal.

He says that the “Defund The Police” movement could result in new investments that could be led by the disadvantaged communities.
