These difficult times are hampering the sleep schedules of many. We are all worried about the year 2020 as it has been very tough till now. Lichuan Ye, Associate Professor of Nursing at Northeastern University, studied health and sleep disorders and highlighted facts about sleep disorders and their remedies. As sleeping well is essential.

We have heard of all the common ways. Reducing the time we stare at our screens, especially during bedtime. Not having heavy meals for dinner etc help too. However, sleep disorders vary from person to person. Finding a single remedy is unfeasible. Ye says the remedies vary too. A booklover would advise reading books before sleeping, or a Yoga trainer would say to do yoga and meditate.

However, one should acknowledge one’s reason for sleep deprivation and anxiety. We often forget to be compassionate towards ourselves. Ye has been working to promote healthy living by better sleep management.

Impacts of not sleeping well

Sleep deprivation leaves terrible impacts on our bodies. It affects our immunity, metabolism, cardiovascular system, and other physiological processes. Our bodies have an internal sleep and wake clock known as the circadian rhythm. When and how much we sleep, affects this rhythm. It can affect our temperature, blood pressure, hormones, digestion, etc. Prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to depression, anxiety, and diabetes too. The consequences vary according to the intensity of deprivation and age.

Ye says, “Sleep is an essential necessity for life-right up there with food.” Studies conducted by sleep scientists reveal that animals can die out of sleep deprivation than starvation. That is why a short daytime nap is suggested if we lack sleep during the night.

However, what exactly a good night’s sleep constitutes isn’t clear and sleeping patterns vary too. Ye says, “A lot of things when we get down to the individual, are also based on genetics”. Culture plays an important factor in one’s sleeping pattern and becomes a way of life eventually. For example- Naps are common among Chinese people. School goers are forced to have a nap.

Ye says, “People often joke and say, ‘if you come to the hospital, you are not coming for a good night’s sleep’. However, one of the biggest complaints of patients is that they don’t get sleep”. Sleep is important for healing. Every individual needs to find their ideal sleep duration and never skip that.
